Week 4
This week of ICPD started with a minor hiccup, as my team realized a huge problem when given a question by Dr. Noel. That question is "what is the chemical engineering principle of our product." in which the number of chemical engineering principle my group have can be counted without a hand. THATS RIGHT, WE COULDN'T THINK OF ANY!!! ASKJDHJASHDAOI
Anyways, so instead of thinking of chemical engineering principle, which our first needs do not have, we decided to think of a different, better needs. Our initial needs is that cyclist will not be seen by car and this poses some safety issue, however, there lies a problem which is this issue is not chemical engineering related. Hence our new idea, which was suggested to us by Dr. Noel is to make a coffee maker that brew a better quality coffee since there is need for good quality coffee brewed by coffee makers.
After which we listed the chemical engineering principle involved:
-Heating
-Extraction
-Evaporation
-Condensation
Next we conducted SCAMPER on existing products. this bring back bad memories of DnT in Secondary schools, and i was especially not fond of SCAMPER as there are some letters that will not have any feasible idea but my secondary school teacher demanded all 7 letters.
SCAMPER abbreviates :
Substitute
Combine
Adapt
Modify
Put to other uses
Eliminate
Reverse
Below is my team SCAMPER draft:
Substitute
- Substitute coffee capsules with coffee powder
- Substitute water tank with tank of milk
Combine
- Combine coffee maker with a coffee bean grinder
- Combine coffee maker with a speaker to listen to song while coffee is brewing
Adapt
- Use coffee maker to heat up water only
- Use coffee maker as thermal flask
Modify
- make coffee maker smaller so it is portable
Put to other uses
-Use the coffee maker as paper weight
Eliminate
- Eliminate the use of cable by using rechargeable batteries instead
Sadly we cannot find anything for reverse, just like me in secondary school.
After we did our scamper, we moved on to the next task in our CA1. The COWS matrix
Below is the link to our COWS matrix:

(I was not able to just input the COWS matrix due to certain issue)
Overall, I have not much comment for this week as it is just relearning of topics i already learnt before, and using them to do our CA1. SCAMPER was already learnt in Secondary School, whereas the COWS matrix was learnt in Material for design last year.
